Etymology
Semi-learned borrowing from Classical Syriac but native in the name of the village, from Parthian 𐫖𐫡𐫃 (mrg /marγ/, “meadow”), from Proto-Iranian *márgaH; compare Old Armenian մարգ (marg), Northern Kurdish مێرگ (mêrg), Arabic مَرْج (marj) and Akkadian 𒈥𒄖 (/margû/, “topographic term, field, meadow-lands, grasslands”). Compare also the inherited form ܡܲܪܓܸܫܬܵܐ (margištā).
