Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *Habʰí, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Habʰí, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂m̥bʰi (round about, around). Cognate with Latin ambi-, Ancient Greek ἀμφί (amphí), Old Persian 𐎠𐎲𐎡𐎹 (abiy, towards, against, upon), Old High German umbi, Old Irish imb (around).

Possibly at the same time a continuation of the ancestor of Proto-Slavic *o(b).
