Inherited from Prakrit 𑀉𑀢𑁆𑀣𑀮 (utthala, “sandhill, *shallow”), from Sanskrit उत्स्थल (utsthala, “name of an island, *shallow”), from उद्- (ud-) + स्थल (sthala). Cognate with Marathi उथळ (uthaḷ).
