Etymology
There are two possible etymological theories as per Date's Maharashtra Sabdakosa[1]:
- Derived from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀔𑀞 (khaṭha), from Sanskrit शठ (śaṭha, “deceitful”) + -आळ (-āḷ).
- Derived from Kannada ಕೆಟ್ಟ (keṭṭa, “bad”) + -आळ (-āḷ).
