From Prakrit *खप्प (khappa, “sheath, cover”), from Dravidian. Compare Telugu కప్పు (kappu, “to cover”). Cognate with Bengali খাপ (khap). Related to Hindi कवच (kavac, “armour”). The sense of "slice of fruit" may be influenced by फाँक (phā̃k, “small piece of food”).
