Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *čáyatay, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷéy-e-ti, from *kʷey- (“to pay”).[1] Cognate with Ancient Greek ποινή (poinḗ) (whence English pain, punish and penalty), Lithuanian kaina (“price”) Old Church Slavonic цѣна (cěna, “price”), Avestan 𐬐𐬀𐬉𐬥𐬁 (kaēnā), Old Armenian քէն (kʻēn, “hate”) and Persian کین (kin, “hatred”).
