Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘓𑘰𑘽𑘢𑘰 (cāṃpā), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀘𑀁𑀧𑀬 (caṃpaya), from Sanskrit चम्प (campa), चम्पक (campak). Compare Gujarati ચંપો (campo), Hindi चंपा (campā), Sindhi چَنبو / चंबो, Punjabi ਚੰਪਾ (campā) / چَمپا (campā), Odia ଚମ୍ପା (campā), Bengali চাঁপা (cãpa), Assamese চঁপা (sõpa).
