Inherited from Prakrit 𑀘𑀁𑀧 (caṃpa), from Sanskrit चम्प (campa), probably borrowed from a Malayo-Polynesian language. Cognate with Assamese চঁপা (sõpa), Odia ଚମ୍ପା (campā), Gujarati ચંપો (campo), Hindi चंपा (campā), Sindhi چَنبو (caṃbo), Punjabi ਚੰਪਾ (campā) / چَمپا (campā), Marathi चाफा (cāphā). Doublet of চম্পা (compa) and চামেলি (cameli).
