छक्का

Hindi

Etymology

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀙𑀓𑁆𑀓 (chakka) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-) without cluster simplification, from Sanskrit षट्क (ṣáṭka). Compare Punjabi ਛੱਕਾ (chakkā) and the other playing card numbers. *chākā would be the expected reflex in Hindi. Cognate with Gujarati ચક્કો (cakko).
