From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ćśáydiṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sčáydiš, from Proto-Indo-European *skéydt (cut off), the aorist of *skeyd- (to split). Cognate with Russian цеди́ть (cedítʹ, to strain, to filter), Ancient Greek σχίζω (skhízō), Latin scindō.
