Inherited from Prakrit *छोट्ट, छोडि (chŏṭṭa, choḍi, “small”), ultimately of uncertain origin. See there for more. Cognate with Nepali छोटो (choṭo, “small”), Gujarati છોટું (choṭũ), Punjabi ਛੋਟਾ (choṭā, “small”), Odia ଛୋଟ (choṭa, “small, lesser”), Assamese ছোট (süto, “junior, low grade”), Sinhalese චූටි (cūṭi, “small”).
