From Proto-Indo-European *ǵénh₁trih₂ (“mother”). Cognate with Latin genitrīx, genetrīx, Ancient Greek γενέτειρα (genéteira). By surface analysis, from the root जन् (jan, “to beget”) +‎ -इत्री (-itrī).

     उ॒भे यद् इ॑न्द्र॒ रोद॑सी आप॒प्राथो॒षा इ॑व ।
     म॒हान्तं॑ त्वा म॒हीनां॑ स॒म्राजं॑ चर्षणी॒नां दे॒वी जनि॑त्र्य् अजीजनद् भ॒द्रा जनि॑त्र्य् अजीजनत् ॥

     ubhé yád indra ródasī āpaprā́thoṣā́ iva.
     mahā́ntaṃ tvā mahī́nāṃ samrā́jaṃ carṣaṇīnā́ṃ devī́ jánitry ajījanad bhadrā́ jánitry ajījanat.

     Like the Morning, you have filled, O Indra, both the earth and heaven.
     The Goddess Mother has given birth to you, the Mighty One, great King of all the mighty world of men; the Blessed Mother gave you life.
