Inherited from Sanskrit टङ्क (ṭaṅka, “leg”), of perhaps ultimately Munda origin. Cognate with Nepali टाङ (ṭāṅ), Marathi तङ्गड (taṅgaḍ), Bengali ঠেং (ṭheṅ), Assamese ঠেং (theṅ).
