डफ

Hindi

Etymology

Borrowed from Classical Persian دف (daf), from Middle Persian 𐭣𐭯 (dp /dap/), ultimately from Sumerian 𒁾 (dub, tablet). The term was nativised (as opposed to the expected दफ़ (daf)), perhaps by the influence of डमरू (ḍamrū).
