Etymology

Proto-Indo-Iranian *díštiš
Sanskrit दिष्टि (diṣṭi)
Inherited from Proto-Indo-Iranian *díštiš, from Proto-Indo-European *déyḱ-tis. By surface analysis, from the root दिश् (diś, “to point out, show”) + -ति (-ti).[1] Cognate with Avestan 𐬛𐬌𐬱𐬙𐬌 (dišti, “a unit of measure”).
The sense "handspan" has been conflated with दृष्टि (dṛṣṭi, “sight”) in some of the descendants.[2]
