From Proto-Indo-European *deyh₂p-, an extension of *deyh₂- (to shine, be bright). Related to दी (, to shine); outside of Indic, compare Persian دیبا (dêbâ, brocade), Old Armenian դէպ (dēp, accident, case, suitable) (an Iranian borrowing), Ancient Greek δῆλος (dêlos, visible), Lithuanian di̇̀delis (big, large).
