    From Proto-Indo-European *dér-ti-s ~ *dr̥-téy-s, from *der- (to tear, to skin). Distantly related to Ancient Greek δέρμα (dérma, skin); more closely to Ancient Greek δάρσις (dársis), Proto-Germanic *turþiz.
