From Proto-Indo-European *dŕ̥tis, equivalent to *teraną + *-þiz. Cognate with Ancient Greek δάρσις (dársis, “separation, tearing”), Sanskrit दृति (dṛ́ti, “skin, bag”) (< masculine), Russian дерть (dertʹ, “cleared land”).
