Derived from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀡𑀺𑀘𑁆𑀘 (ṇicca) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit नीच (nīcá), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *niHćás (“facing down”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *niHčás, from Proto-Indo-European *ni-h₃kʷ-ós, from *ní (“down”) + *-h₃kʷ- (“facing, looking”).
