Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *HniHagHráwdʰas, from *Hni (“down”) + *Hać-, zero grade of *Hanć- (“to bend, incline”) + *Hráwdʰas (“growing, growth”), from Proto-Indo-European *(h₁)ni + *h₂enk- + *h₁lewdʰ- respectively. Literally, "growing downwards", referring to the tree's propagating roots which grow downwards as aerial roots and grow into woody trunks upon reaching the ground.
