Uncertain; probably from an earlier unattested [script needed] (*pallaṭṭ), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀧𑀮𑁆𑀮𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀇 (pallaṭṭaï, to turn over), as parathas are flipped over when cooking (like pancakes).[1]
