Inherited from Sanskrit *वड्र-त्वन (*vaḍra-tvana), from वड्र (vaḍra, “large”) + -त्वन (-tvana). By surface analysis, बड़ा (baṛā) + -पन (-pan). Cognate with Punjabi ਵਡੱਪਣ (vaḍappaṇ).
