Inherited from Apabhramsa वण्णिया (vaṇṇiyā), from Prakrit वण्णिआ (vaṇṇiā), वन्निआ (vanniā, “model, sample, specimen”) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓𑁆𑀓- (-kka-)[1] from Sanskrit वर्णिका (varṇikā),[2][3] from वर्ण (várṇa) + -इका (-ikā).
