Etymology

A compound with the first element being Sanskrit वायु (vāyu, wind).[1] For the second component, perhaps:

    • From Prakrit 𑀙𑀟𑀸 (chaḍā, drop, lightning), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀙𑀝𑁆 (*chaṭ).[2] Compare छड़ना (chaṛnā, to sift).
    • From छार (chār, mass, lump, clod), from Prakrit 𑀙𑀟𑀸 (chaḍā, mass, lump).
    • From छाड़ (chāṛ, vomit), from Prakrit 𑀙𑀟𑁆𑀟𑀺 (chaḍḍi, vomiting sickness), from Sanskrit छर्दि (chardi, expulsion).
    • Dasa suggests Sanskrit दरित (darita, timid) but this does not make sense.
