Etymology
Vṛddhi derivative of भूमि (bhūmi); literally meaning "relating to or produced from the earth". The sense "Mars" comes from the Hindu mythology, where the deity Maṅgala, the personification of the planet Mars, is considered to be the son of the goddess Bhūmi, the personification of the earth.
