Etymology
Borrowed from Northwestern Indo-Aryan, from Prakrit 𑀫𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀡 (makkhaṇa), from Sanskrit म्रक्षण (mrakṣaṇa). Cognate with Punjabi ਮੱਖਣ (makkhaṇ). Displaced Hindi माखन (mākhan) outside of the expression माखन-चोर (mākhan-cor), an epithet of Krishna.
