Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *mántras, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mántras, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *men- (“to think”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬄𐬚𐬭𐬀 (mąθra). The Sanskrit root is मन् (man).
