Etymology
Most likely a derivative of मा (mā, “measure, magic, binding, fettering”), though derivation from a seṭ-variant of मन् (man, “to think, suppose”) is also possible.[1] Probably unrelated to Bulgarian мая (maja, “distract, enchant, delay”).[2]
