From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ráźȷ́uṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *rázǰuš, from Proto-Indo-European *résg-u-s, from *(H)resg- (“to weave, plait”). Cognate with Latin restis, Russian ро́зга (rózga), Lithuanian rezgti. Compare also Old Armenian երագազ (eragaz), an Iranian borrowing.

     यद्वा॒जिनो॒ दाम॑ सं॒दान॒मर्व॑तो॒ या शी॑र्ष॒ण्या॑ रश॒ना रज्जु॑र्अ॒स्य॒।
     यद्वा॑ घास्य॒ प्रभृ॑तमा॒स्ये॒३॒॑ तृणं॒ सर्वा॒ ता ते॒ अपि॑ दे॒वेष्व॑स्तु॥

     yádvājíno dā́ma saṃdā́namárvato yā́ śīrṣaṇyā̀ raśanā́ rájjurasya.
     yádvā ghāsya prábhṛtamāsyè tṛ́ṇaṃ sárvā tā́ te ápi devéṣvastu.

     May the fleet Courser's halter and his heel-ropes, the head-stall, and the girths and cords about him.
     And the grass put in his mouth to bait him,--among the Devas, too, let all these be with thee.
