Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀭𑁄𑀓𑁆𑀓 (*rokka) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-),[1] from Sanskrit रोक (roka, “buying with ready money”). Compare Punjabi ਰੋਕੜ (rokaṛ) / روکَڑ (rokaṛ), Sindhi روڪَڙِ / रोकड़ि, Gujarati રોકડ (rokaḍ), Marathi रोकड (rokaḍ), Telugu రొక్కము (rokkamu), Kannada ರೊಕ್ಕ (rokka), Tamil ரொக்கம் (rokkam), Malayalam റൊക്കം (ṟokkaṁ).
