Etymology

Turner connects the word to रोट् (roṭ, to strike against) and *रोञ्च् (*roñc, to crush, press in) (which is not attested in Sanskrit but has descendants in Prakrit and modern Indo-Aryan, like रोंचणे (rõċṇẽ, to force in, penetrate)), and, along with Mayrhofer, leaves the origin of all three open.
