Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘫𑘹𑘕 (śeja),[1] from Prakrit 𑀲𑁂𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀸 (sĕjjā), from Sanskrit *शेय्या (*śeyyā).[2] Cognate with Gujarati સેજ (sej).
