Etymology

Probably from Proto-Indo-European *ḱów-no- (luminous; vibrant), perhaps an extension of *ḱew- (to shine), and related to शुच् (śuc, to shine), शुध् (śudh, to purify), and शुभ् (śubh, to beautify); outside of Indic, compare perhaps Welsh cun (lovely), Russian суни́ка (suníka, wild strawberry).
