From Proto-Indo-European *sekʷ- (to follow). Cognate with Old Persian 𐏃𐎧𐎠𐎶𐎴𐎡𐏁 (haxamaniš, friendly mannered (the ruler Achaemenes)), Latin sequor (follow) whence English sequence etc., Latin socius, Proto-Germanic *sagjaz (warrior, retainer).
