के सिवाय
Hindi
Alternative forms
- के सिवा (ke sivā)
- सिवाय (sivāy)
Etymology
Borrowed from Classical Persian سِوَایَ (siwāya), سِوَا (siwā), from Arabic سِوَا (siwā, “apart from, except”), from س و ي (s w y). Cognate with Gujarati સિવાય (sivāya), Marathi शिवाय (śivāy), Konkani शिवाय (śivāy), and Punjabi ਸਿਵਾ (sivā).
Pronunciation
- (Delhi) IPA(key): /keː sɪ.ʋɑːj/, [keː‿sɪ.ʋäːj]
Postposition
के सिवाय • (ke sivāy) (Urdu spelling کے سوائے)
Usage notes
May appear inverted with its object, as in either आपके सिवाय (āpke sivāy) or सिवाय आपके (sivāy āpke, “except for you”), and also not necessarily with the genitive marker (e.g. के (ke)).
