From Proto-Indo-Iranian *stʰuHnáH (“pillar”), from Proto-Indo-European *sth₂-uh₂-néh₂, from *steh₂- (“to stand”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬯𐬙𐬏𐬥𐬀 (stūna), Persian ستون (sotun, “pillar”).
