Based on स्फुट (sphuṭa, “opened”), perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *(s)bʰl̥-tó- (“swollen, blown, burst open”). The retroflexion is in this case due to Fortunatov's law.

Compare फल (phala), though a Dravidian etymology is also proposed for that term. It is also possible that this root is related to फल् (phal, “to burst, cleave open”) instead, or is of onomatopoeic origin.
