From Proto-Indo-European *(s)mey- (“to laugh, be glad”). Cognate with Ancient Greek μειδᾰ́ω (meidắō, “smile”), Proto-Slavic *smьjàti (“to laugh”), Latin mīrus (“wonderful”) the source of English admire etc.; Latvian smieties (“laugh”); English smile and possibly smirk.
