From Proto-Indo-European *sweh₂d- (sweet). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἡδῠ́ς (hēdŭ́s), ἡδονή (hēdonḗ, delight, taste) whence English hedonism; Latin suādeō, suavis; English sweet.
