Inherited from Middle Bengali আঢ়াই (aṛhai), from Old Bengali আঢাই (āḍhāi), from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀅𑀟𑁆𑀠𑀸𑀇𑀬 (aḍḍhāiya), from Sanskrit अर्धतृतीय (ardhatṛtīya, “two and a half”, literally “[two full ones and] half of the third”).
