Etymology

Learned borrowing from Sanskrit आलु (ālu), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *HaHlu-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eHlu- (edible root). Originally meant any edible plant roots in Indo-Aryan languages, only universally changing to mean potatoes after the colonial introduction of the plant (compare the similar development in ভুট্টা (bhuṭṭa, maize)).
