Cognate with Sylheti ꠝꠣꠍ (masó), Bengali মাছ (mach), Odia ମାଛ (mācha), Hindi मच्छ (macch), Punjabi ਮੱਛ (maccha), Sindhi مَڇُ / मछु (machu), Marathi मासा (māsā).

Doublet of মৎস্য (moitso, moisso).
