Inherited from Prakrit 𑀉𑀟𑁆𑀟𑁂𑀇 (uḍḍei), from Sanskrit ઉડ્ડયતે (uḍḍayate), a variant of ઉડ્ડીયતે (uḍḍīyate), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *uẓḍiHyáti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *udᶻdiHyáti (“to fly upwards or away”), from Proto-Indo-European *úd-s-dih₁yéti, a compound of *úd (“upwards, away”) + *dih₁yéti (“to chase”). Cognate with Bengali উড়া (uṛa), Hindi उड़ना (uṛnā), Marathi उडणे (uḍṇe), Nepali उड्नु (uḍnu).
