Adapted from Sanskrit ગર્જતિ (gárjati).[1] Doublet of ગાજવું (gājvũ). Compare Hindustani گَرَجْنَا (garajnā) / गरजना (garajnā), Marathi गरजणे (garajṇe), Punjabi ਗਰਜਣਾ (garjaṇā) / گَرجݨا (garjṇā), Maithili गरजब (garᵊjab) / 𑒑𑒩𑒖𑒥 (garajaba).
