Inherited from Gurjara Apabhramsa सारु (sāru), from Prakrit 𑀲𑀸𑀭𑀬 (sāraya, “most efficient”) (compare Ashokan Prakrit 𑀲𑀸𑀭 (sāra, “the essential”)), from Sanskrit સારક (sāraka) (compare સાર (sāra)).
