Inherited from Proto-Dravidian *ponku. Cognate with Tamil பொங்கு (poṅku, “to boil over, bubble up”), பொங்கல் (poṅkal, “pongal”), Kannada ಪೊಙ್ಗು (poṅgu, “to boil over”).
