Etymology 1
Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *ɡapᴰˢ⁴ (“narrow; tight; confined”),[1] from Proto-Tai *ɡapᴰ (“tight; narrow”),[2] possibly from Middle Chinese 狹 (MC heap, “narrow”) (which became doublet of แคบ (kɛ̂ɛp)).
In Southwestern Tai, cognate with Northern Thai ᨣᩢ᩠ᨷ, Lao ຄັບ (khap), Lü ᦅᧇ (kab), Tai Dam ꪁꪚꪾ, Shan ၵပ်ႉ (kâ̰p).
In Central Tai, cognate with Tày cặp.
In Northern Tai, Zhuang gaeb.
In other Tai, Zuojiang Zhuang kaep (Chongzuo and Ningming dialects)[3] or gaeb (Longzhou and Daxin dialects).[3]
