Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *ɣɛːpᴰᴸ⁴ (narrow),[1] from Middle Chinese (MC heap, “narrow”).

In Southwestern Tai, cognate with Lao ແຄບ (khǣp), Tai Dam ꪵꪁꪚ, Tai Dón ꪵꪅꪚ, Shan ၵႅပ်ႈ (kēp).

In Northern Tai, cognate with Saek เกฺ้บ.

Possibly doublet of คับ (káp).
