Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *ɣɛːpᴰᴸ⁴ (“narrow”),[1] from Middle Chinese 狹 (MC heap, “narrow”).
In Southwestern Tai, cognate with Lao ແຄບ (khǣp), Tai Dam ꪵꪁꪚ, Tai Dón ꪵꪅꪚ, Shan ၵႅပ်ႈ (kēp).
In Northern Tai, cognate with Saek เกฺ้บ.
Possibly doublet of คับ (káp).
