From Proto-Tai *gaːᴬ (stuck),[1] Old Chinese (OC *ɡa, *ɡal, *kraːl, “cangue”).

Cognate with Lao ຄາ (khā), ᦅᦱ (kaa), Saek ค๊า, Tày , Zhuang gaz.
