From Proto-Tai *ɓloːkᴰ (flower). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨯᩬᨠ, Lao ດອກ (dǭk), ᦡᦸᧅᧈ (ḋoak¹), Tai Dam ꪚꪮꪀ, ꪒꪮꪀ, Shan မွၵ်ႇ (màuk), ဝွၵ်ႇ (wàuk), Tai Nüa ᥛᥩᥐᥱ (mǒak), Phake မွက် (mok), Ahom 𑜉𑜨𑜀𑜫 (mok), 𑜈𑜨𑜀𑜫 (bok), Nong Zhuang ndog, Tày bjoóc. Doublet of กระบอก (grà-bɔ̀ɔk) and ตระบอก, both “flower”.
